Before you buy. Before you apply.

Seven questions for a better fertilizer decision.

A practical review for farmers, growers and advisers. Check the crop, the evidence and the product before committing to an application.

Rubix Innovations: Farmer's fertilizer checklist

A pause before purchase

Review each decision, not just the product.

Use this checklist to organise what you know and what still needs professional advice. It is a learning aid, not an approval to apply fertilizer.

Seven decisions before purchasing or applying fertilizer
  1. Different crops have different nutrient requirements.

    • Identify the crop and variety, previous crop and expected yield.
    • Use a crop guide as a starting point, not as a fixed fertilizer programme.
    Find your crop
  2. A soil test can identify nutrient deficiencies and guide fertilizer decisions.

    • Review soil type and a representative soil test; use plant analysis where appropriate.
    • Ask a qualified agronomist to interpret results alongside the field's history and conditions.
    Understand soil testing
  3. Check the guaranteed analysis printed on the product label.

    • Read the nutrient analysis, product form and intended use rather than relying on the name alone.
    • Check label directions, warnings and applicable local regulatory requirements.
    Read NPK formulations
  4. Nutrients may be required at different stages of crop growth.

    • Identify the current growth stage and the purpose of the planned application.
    • Review weather and environmental conditions, then confirm timing against the label and local agronomic advice.
    Review crop priorities
  5. Application may be through soil application, broadcasting, band placement, fertigation or foliar application.

    • Confirm that the product is intended for the chosen method and available equipment.
    • Follow label concentration and compatibility instructions; do not assume that every product is suitable for mixing, spraying or irrigation systems.
    Compare application methods
  6. Consider salinity, pH, chloride sensitivity, irrigation water and other field conditions.

    • Review the crop, soil and irrigation-water constraints before selecting the nutrient source.
    • Confirm product compatibility, safe storage and handling requirements.
    Check compatibility and safety
  7. More fertilizer does not necessarily mean higher yield. Excessive application can increase costs, cause nutrient imbalance and harm soil or water quality.

    • Review all planned nutrient sources, including organic materials, before deciding rates.
    • Confirm the crop-specific programme with soil/plant results, product labels and a qualified agricultural professional or agriculture authority.
